Michigan is a no-fault divorce state, meaning you don't need to prove wrongdoing. You only need to state that the marriage has broken down with no reasonable likelihood of reconciliation. One spouse must have lived in Michigan for at least 180 days and in the county for at least 10 days before filing.

In Michigan, divorces without minor children have a minimum waiting period of 60 days. Cases involving minor children require a minimum of 6 months. However, complex cases involving property division, custody disputes, or high-conflict situations can take significantly longer.

Michigan only recognizes no-fault divorce. The sole ground is that there has been a breakdown of the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed and there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved.
